Assistant Attorney General

Labor and State Affairs Section - Full-Time; Juneau Office

The State of Alaska, Department of Law is recruiting for an attorney to serve in the Labor and State Affairs section of the Civil Division.

Position Description

The Labor and State Affairs section of the Juneau Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a full-time attorney to represent the state primarily in retirement and benefits and employment matters. The position will advise state agencies on retirement and benefits and employment issues and represent their interests in litigation, appeals, and administrative proceedings. As necessary, the position may also provide advice and represent state agencies in various other matters involving, for example, constitutional claims, the open meetings act, the public records act, and contracts.

The position requires a minimum of two full years of licensed practice of law. A background in retirement and benefits law and employment law is preferred, but not required. Experience with state and federal anti-discrimination laws, wage and hour laws, the Family Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act is desirable. Applicants must be able to handle all phases of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, administrative hearings, trials, and appeals. Prior litigation experience is preferred. The successful applicant must possess precise analytical skills, excellent writing ability, and confidence in oral advocacy.

Salary will depend upon the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. A comprehensive state benefits package is provided for regular, full-time, partially-exempt (PX) positions. State attorneys are in the partially-exempt service and serve at-will at the pleasure of the Attorney General.
