Hooks Jr. Convicted of Felony Failure to Pay Child Support in Anchorage
August 7, 2024
(Anchorage, AK) – Today, following a three-day trial, an Anchorage jury found 64-year-old Rand Joseph Hooks Jr. guilty of two counts of felony Failure to Pay Child Support.
The jury convicted Hooks for failing to pay $184,309.11 in child support and for not paying any child support from November 2018 until October 2021 for three children.
At trial, the mother of the three children testified that the last time she saw Hooks was when he dropped her and their three children at the airport in 2010. The mother further testified that Hooks never called the children, sent birthday presents to the children, nor visited the children. Evidence at trial documented that money collected since November 2018 was due to the efforts of the Child Support Enforcement Division having located unclaimed property of Hooks and seizing that property to distribute to the children.
The case was investigated by Child Support Enforcement Division Investigator Rachel King. Assistant Attorney General Daniel K. Shorey and Department of Law intern Zachary Hayburn prosecuted the case along with paralegal Lynn Mulkern. Hooks is on release pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Dec. 5, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. Hooks faces a sentencing range from 0 to 5 years.
